Polaris issues recalls for ROVs, ATVs due to fire risk

Polaris is recalling more than 20,000 recreational off road and all-terrain vehicles due to fire risks, after receiving multiple reports of fires.

The company published two recalls to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Sept. 19. One applies to certain Ranger XD 1500 Recreational Off-Road Vehicles with winches, and the other applies to certain Sportsman All-Terrain Vehicles.

ROV recall 

Polaris issued a recall for about 10,500 recreational off-road vehicles (ROVs) and 1,336 winches in the United States, as well as about 660 ROVs  in Canada. 

According to the recall, the winch wiring can overheat in the vehicles while in use, posing a fire hazard and “risk of serious injury” to the rider or passenger. The firm has received one report of fire so far, but no injuries have been reported.

The recall applies to certain VINs of model year 2024 RANGER XD 1500 and RANGER CREW XD 1500 ROVs. The recalled ROVs were sold in camouflage, red and silver colors at Polaris dealers nationwide from Feb. 2023 through Aug. 2024 for between $40,000 and $50,500. The recall also involves 4,500 and 6,000 lb. winches purchased as an accessory. 

Consumers should immediately stop using the winch in the recalled ROVs and contact an authorized Polaris dealer to schedule a free repair, the company said. Polaris is contacting registered owners directly.

Sportsman ATV recall

Polaris is also recalling about 10,300 all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and 3,158 fuel pump kits and fuel tank assemblies in the United States, as well as  about 1,500 ATVs sold in Canada.

According to the recall, the ATV can leak fuel at the fuel pump flange outlet, posing a fire hazard and risk of “serious injury” to the rider or passenger. The firm has received 14 reports of fuel leaking from the recalled ATVs and three reports of fire. No injuries have been reported so far.

This recall involves certain VINs of model year 2023-2024 Sportsman 850, XP 1000, and XP 1000 S ATVs. The recalled ATVs were sold in black, blue, camouflage, crimson, gray, green, red, silver and tan at Polaris dealers nationwide from July 2023 through June 2024 for between $10,600 and $18,000. The recall also involves fuel pump kits (part numbers 2208595 and 2208596) and fuel tank assemblies (part numbers 2522378 and 2522379) sold as service parts.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ATVs and contact an authorized Polaris dealer to schedule a free repair to replace the fuel pump, the company said. Polaris is contacting registered owners directly.

In April, Polaris issued a recall was issued for more than 10,000 model year 2022-2023 snowmobiles with Patriot Boost engines due to potential fuel line leaks that can lead to fires.
